The SlaterHope team, founded by Mark and Claire Doyle, have invested in property since 1991. Throughout the 1990’s various small scale projects were acquired and improved or developed in London and Bedfordshire.
In 2001, a return to Cheshire and Lancashire opened up the opportunities presented by the diverse northern property market. A few of these projects are detailed in the following sections.
Mark is a Chartered Engineer who moved into business & property full time following a serious rugby injury in 1996. Landlords and investors since 1991, he and his wife Claire have well over 30 years of experience in buy-to-lets (BTLs), Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), developments, and conversions into flats and houses.
We've been involved in property investing since 1991. Our focus for many years was initially our careers & a variety of businesses. However, year after year we accidentally did well in property. Our first few years were spent doing flips, then we built a BRR portfolio of BTL properties and latterly we moved onto commercial conversions, blocks of flats and larger projects.
Thanks to our parents, both of us had a great education: myself at Leeds University & living in Hamburg, Mark at Liverpool University & Imperial College, London. We were based in London with demanding careers; Mark had a diverse background working on the oil rigs in Africa, the Middle East and the North Sea, served in the Royal Engineers and then as a consulting engineer on major projects in the UK from the residential development of 250 contaminated British Gas sites to designing Crossrail & even expert witness work in Parliament for Jubilee Line. I became a marketing specialist with a UK manufacturing company with links to Germany, & then joined BT's retail marketing programme in central London. But alongside this, we also set up several businesses, always wanting to do something more for ourselves.
We learned about property by doing, having a go and simply making mistakes, even getting going during the early 1990's recession!
We have always tried to focus on our strengths in buying property so, whether we buy at auction, on the High Street or DTV, we usually buy ‘problem’ properties/ projects to which we can add value.
Every house or building project brings its own set of challenges, whether they’re planning issues, damp, or structural defects. With Mark’s background as a chartered engineer, we’ve turned his experience into a plus for us so that we buy buildings which some investors may not consider.
Our focus has changed over time as we’ve now bought, refurbished, kept or sold properties in two periods of recession and we’ve adapted our strategies to fit the market economy.
Developing our property portfolio over the last 30 years has been fun, challenging, rewarding, frustrating, annoying, and uplifting in equal measures. It has made us be creative, solution-oriented and given us an "out of the box" way of thinking
